After-school programs in California

By Agustín Mendez · Updated November 6, 2026

California licenses school-age day care centers for children in kindergarten and up, before and after school and during breaks. 1,245 are in our city listings. Many public schools also run their own expanded learning programs, which may not need a CCLD license.

What to compare

  • Which schools they pick up from, and how.
  • Hours on minimum days, holidays and summer.
  • Homework help, outdoor time and activities.
  • Staff-to-child groups and how pickup is handled.

Help paying

Children under 13 can be covered by CalWORKs, Alternative Payment and General Child Care.
